gasolIne afforDabIlITy anD vehICle MIles TraveleD In 2008, the total number of miles traveled on U.S. roads decreased by 3.6 percent from the previous year to just over 2.9 trillion miles. This decline marks the first drop in miles traveled in since 1980. The decline in miles traveled was due to a number of factors including consumer reaction to high gasoline prices, the unstable economy and the growth in unemployment.
