MexICan afTerMarkeT The Mexican automotive industry experienced positive growth over the past decade thus providing a platform for business with U.S. companies. However, in 2008 Mexican sales of light vehicles declined 6.8 percent from a total of 1.10 million in 2007 to 1.03 million in 2008. Light vehicles in the top ten category by make represented 96 percent of total sales. The best selling vehicle make was General Motors, which comprised more than one-fifth or 20.7 percent of total sales. Nissan, also with 20.7 percent of total sales, ran a close second while Volkswagen was third with 13.4 percent. Even with the decline in sales, Mexican total production increased 4.0 percent from 2.02 million vehicles in 2007 to 2.1 million vehicles in 2008. At the same time, Mexico’s exports declined 9.8 percent from 1.84 million vehicles in 2007 to 1.66 million vehicles in 2008.
