with the availability of DRIVE, this month’s Toolbox focuses on the value of training and development and how to manage the training and development of employees for the best return on investment. In January 2010, the AAIA Education Committee launched DRIVE (Directory of Resources for Industry Valued Education), an online directory of training and education resources to help make it easier for the aftermarket to locate training and development opportunities for themselves and their staff. DRIVE is a search engine of resources populated by aftermarket manufacturers, distributors, state organizations, private training organizations, recommended training and development providers and industry stakeholders with information on their available opportunities accessible via the Internet. The AAIA Education Committee encourages all aftermarket employees to use DRIVE when trying to access available programs and materials. DRIVE is user-friendly and lists programs available for all aftermarket employees. DRIVE is expected to grow as additional education and training providers are listed and aftermarket employees get used to turning to DRIVE for their resource needs. If you have any questions about DRIVE or would like to be listed as a provider, e-mail Susan Kalish, senior director, education at susan.kalish@aftermarket.org or Gina Lemon, education assistant at gina.lemon@ aftermarket.org, or call 301-654-6664.

who Needs Training?
Who needs training and development? Every worker at every level of every business or organization needs to continuously improve their skills, knowledge and abilities in order to do their job to the best of their ability and to contribute to business goals. Unfortunately, training and development is usually considered an expense instead of an investment, and is regularly the first item to be cut in a company’s budget. But that short-term view can be a mistake for the future of your business. Training and development is important for many reasons. • It enables employees to develop or enhance skills, knowledge and abilities critical to the success of your company or organization. Employees are your most important asset — your business cannot exist or grow without them. Your employees enable your company to keep current with, or beat, the capabilities of your competitors. Investing in your employees is the best way for your company to reach its profitability goals. • Cost savings — Employees armed with the appropriate skills and abilities get the job done right the first time, therefore reducing the costs of returns and repeated work. • Critical retention tool/reduces turnover – Statistics indicate that the younger generations in the workforce average three years per job before moving on. By investing in these employees, you can send a message on how important they are to the success of your business, which may encourage them to remain and grow in your company. • Increased job satisfaction and morale among employees – Staff selected for development opportunities appreciate your trust in them, which in turn motivates them and thanks you by providing greater commitment to you and your organization.
