In the early 1930s, architecture student Lee Hunter, Jr. was constantly frustrated with battery failure in his Packard convertible. At age 23, after several years of hard work and experimentation, Hunter designed and produced the Kwikurent - a battery charger that reduced charging time on automotive batteries from days to minutes. This revolutionary product sold as quickly as it could be produced, establishing the Hunter name overnight. After serving in the U.S. Army Engineering and Ordnance Corps during World War II, Hunter returned to St. Louis and developed the Tune-In wheel balancer. The Tune-In solved another longstanding problem of balancing an automobile’s wheels in rotation. This invention proved just as popular as the Kwikurent and led to a series of innovations in the fast-developing undercar market. Engineering and Expanding Today, Hunter Engineering designs, manufactures and sells a variety of undercar equipment including computer-based wheel alignment systems, wheel balancers, on- and off-car brake lathes, tire changers, lift racks and vehicle inspection systems.
