More than 200 AHEPA family and friends gathered at Terrace on the Park in New York City to honor His Eminence. Dr. Anthony J. Limberakis, the National Commander of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, and Ahepan from Chapter 60, spoke about the devoted service His Eminence has provided for these last 10 years. Consul General Aglia Balta from the Greek Consulate of New York also echoed his sentiments. Supreme President Nicholas A. Karacostas drew upon events over the past 10 years which reaffirmed the leadership, wisdom, and love His Eminence provides to the Greek Orthodox Church in America. He cited the Archbishop’s tireless work following the tragic 9/11 terror attacks as one of many poignant moments during the past decade. Supreme President Karacostas presents Archbishop Demetrios with a gift in honor of his 10 years of spiritual guidance to the Greek Orthodox community. They are flanked by (l-r): Supreme Governor Kontos, Chairman of the Board Manios, PSP; Supreme Vice President Grossomanides, Jr., and Supreme Governor Manolios. “The Archbishop gives so much of his time and energy to be a good Shepherd in America,” Karacostas said. “We are very proud of his good works and we are very supportive of his ministry.” Sons of Pericles Supreme President Dean Tselepis thanked His Eminence for his dedication to the youth. More than 30 Sons and Maids surrounded His Eminence when Brother Tselepis presented him with a gift on behalf of the Junior Auxiliaries. Archbishop Demetrios Proclaims “AHEPA Sunday” His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios proclaimed May 16, 2010 as “AHEPA Sunday” in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. “On this day we as the Holy Archdiocese of America recognize the members and service of the American Hellenic Educational and Progressive Association. The AHEPA family has a long history of promoting Hellenism, education, philanthropy, civic responsibility, family and individual excellence in a spirit of true diakonia and community,” wrote the archbishop in the Encyclical. “We are very grateful and honored by the eloquent words His Eminence used to describe the hard work that our members carry-out on a daily basis,” said Supreme President Karacostas. “The Order of AHEPA is proud of its 88-year history and standing with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America; a relationship that has depicted the two entities as being ‘The Twin Pillars of Hellenism’ in America. This relationship has blossomed over the past ten-and-ahalf years with His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios.” Sons Supreme President Tselepis also presented a gift to the Archbishop for his selfless dedication to the youth. The Archbishop and Tselepis are surrounded by local Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena members. www.ahepa.org Summer 2010 the ahepan 7 http://www.ahepa.org
