That's the mental image Stuart Bradford had when he set about doing the illustrations for this issue. "The challenge of these illustrations was to communicate the main theme of emerging markets- a 'wild frontier'-while using ideas of the city and travel," he says. "Elements like binoculars, a pontoon plane, and butterfly net continue the idea of an expedition and tell the story of a search." Bradford lives in the San Francisco Bay area. Chairman and CEO Joe Mansueto Patricia Oey Managing Director, Design David Williams Patricia Oey, a senior fund analyst on Morningstar's passive funds research team, has had a front row seat to the emergence of "smart beta" strategies, one of the hottest topics in the investing world. She's particularly interested in how these strategies are providing new types of access to emerging markets. "There is a lot of growth in emerging markets, but the challenge is how investors can capitalize on these trends. Are these new passively managed strategies good options?'" Oey answered those questions from two perspectives this issue. She penned "Factor Investing in Emerging Markets" (Page 46), where she lays out her top picks that employ factor investing strategies. "It has been interesting to see how these strategies are performing in the current weak market environment," she says. "If we were in a bull market like 10 years ago, we may not have stopped to think how these strategies may work through a full market cycle." In "Following the Rules" (Page 48), she looks at how an index methodology can lead to drastic changes in portfolio construction.
