Tony Thomas, a senior analyst with Morningstar
Research Services, first came across Calvert Equity
while covering other Atlanta Capital funds
that are Morningstar Medalists. Fund manager
Joe Hudepohl and team use a similar process, but
with a mandate to incorporate environmental,
social, and governance analysis. "That piqued my
interest," Thomas says. "Its portfolio turnover
was modest, it tended to hold up better than peers
in market sell-offs, and it had generated
competitive absolute returns." Thomas says he
came away from his visit with the team in Atlanta
with a new appreciation of the subtleties of
ESG investing. (Undiscovered Manager, Page 78.)

Christopher Lane specializes in documentary
and portrait photography-his work has
been shown at the National Portrait Gallery-
and has contributed to the magazine since 2007,
the year it debuted. He took on this issue's
assignments as coronavirus concerns first hit the
market. Rather than a typical session of
multiple takes, Lane pulled off a shoot of Michael
Collins "in about two minutes so that he could
concentrate on running his portfolios." (Ten
Questions, Page 96.) Lane photographed financial
advisor Tony Isola working safely "at a social
distance near his home on Long Island.
He filled me with empathy and hope that
everything will soon be just fine." (User Profile,
Page 86.)

To convey the market plunge on this issue's
cover, Stuart Bradford used "strong metaphor:
images of explosion, worry, and downward
movement." But that's not the whole
story. "The illustration sequence develops from
the monochromatic to bold color," he says,
"underscoring the growth of the market over time.
This is probably the first and last time I'll
get to use a black turkey, unfortunately." (Spotlight,
Page 37.) Bradford has illustrated several issues
of the magazine over the years, most recently
the August/September 2018 issue on active bond
managers. His other clients include MIT, Kaiser
Permanente, Stanford University, Harvard Business
Review, and The New York Times.
