As a senior equity analyst, Julie Utterback must
assess how various scenarios might affect
the valuations of the healthcare companies she
covers. When politics and elections are involved,
that task can be complicated, but Utterback
prepares for any eventuality. " We thought
the likelihood of Democrats controlling the Senate
was fairly low, " she says, " but we had that
scenario in mind. " Utterback says that whichever
way the political winds blow, " there is a
private/public healthcare partnership in the U.S.
that would be hard to untangle. " In this issue's
Spotlight, she explains why U.S. healthcare
companies are likely to stay the course ( " Business
as Usual, " Page 29).

Healthcare strategist Karen Andersen has
had a weather eye on COVID-19 vaccine
development and is optimistic about what she
sees. " The more I learn about mRNA
vaccines, the more I think we're just at the tip
of the iceberg in finding new uses for this
technology, " she says. " Its ability to adapt to
mutations quickly is something we haven't seen
before with older vaccine technologies.
This is a great example of continuing innovation
in the biopharma industry. " In " Herd Immunity
in Sight, " Page 35, Andersen lays out a
likely timeline for achieving the herd immunity
necessary to end the pandemic.

Illustrator Sol Cotti likes to tell visual stories
using a bold, simple, and loose style, with relaxed
lines and a touch of texture. For this issue's
Spotlight topic, Cotti built on recognizable symbols
and images to conceptualize the connection
between politics and the business of healthcare
in the United States. Cotti's clients include
media such as The New Yorker and NPR,
companies including Airbnb, and The Guggenheim
Museum. She is based in Buenos Aires.
