In " Striving Toward Sustainability " (Page 31), Josh
Charlson and Alyssa Stankiewicz of Morningstar
Research Services LLC combine their expertise
to demonstrate how to build a sustainable fund
portfolio. As a director in manager selection,
Charlson has developed ESG select lists for clients,
while Stankiewicz is a sustainability analyst
who sits on the multi-asset funds research team.

" I've been interested in researching the most
effective ways to integrate ESG into portfolios, "
Stankiewicz says. " There are a lot of nuances
in asset classes other than equity, with different
levels of data and transparency. "
" We knew there would be categories with fewer
options available, " says Charlson. " But we
show that you can substantially improve the ESG
metrics of a portfolio while still maintaining
comparable style and risk/return characteristics. "
Sachin Nagarajan
Sachin Nagarajan joined the Morningstar
Development Program for recent college graduates
in 2019 and assisted financial advisors using
Morningstar Office before landing in the editorial
group. Today, he writes features for new investors
on Morningstar.com and enjoys " meeting
readers where they are. " Interviewing Lily Bowles
about shareholder engagement (Page 39) inspired
Nagarajan to think about incorporating ESG
into his own portfolio. " I could tell from her
voice how passionate she is about ESG investing, "
he says, " and it reframed how I view it. "
Cristina Spanò
For this issue's Spotlight, Barcelona-based Italian
illustrator Cristina Spanò applied her colorful,
comic book style to the idea that ESG investors
today have an array of choices. " Plants are
a good metaphor for sustainability and growth, "
she says, " and you can choose one as if you were
picking your favorite flower for the center of
your table. " Spanò studied graphic design at ISIA
Urbino in Italy and illustration at EINA in Barcelona.
Her illustrations have appeared in publications
such as National Geographic and The New
York Times and in books for children and adults
distributed around the world.
