Simon Scott, director of alternatives ratings
with Morningstar's global manager research team,
came to Morningstar in 2018 with a wide
range of experience in alternative investments,
including product development. " I've been
on both sides of the fence, and on top and
underneath it, " he says. In " When History Rhymes "
(Page 38), he brings that perspective to the
rise of private equity. Scott expects that a " tsunami
of products " will expand access to this market
in the coming years, but he notes that private
equity may not be the boon that ordinary investors
expect: " People assume they should be in
these investments because endowments and
pension funds are, but broad index funds
may deliver the same return profile. " Scott also

Gregg Wolper
Senior manager research analyst Gregg Wolper
has been covering international funds for
Morningstar since 1992. " It was much more
unusual to invest in emerging-markets stocks back
then, " he says. " They were mostly national
telecom and construction companies. " Perhaps the
most significant change is the rise of the Chinese
market: " Emerging markets are China and
everything else, and index fund investors should
be aware of that. " For this issue's Undiscovered
Manager feature (Page 64), Wolper profiles a
Pzena Investment Management team that goes in
a different direction. " Pzena's deep-value style
is uncommon these days, " he says.
Hanna Barczyk
This issue's cover illustrator, Hanna Barczyk, boldly
conceptualizes the flourishing private equity
market. " The symbol of the keyhole helps to signify
the idea of public versus private, as well as
limiting accessibility to a few, " she says. Barczyk's
clients include The New Yorker, Apple, and
Penguin/Random House, and she recently
published a children's book with the Museum of
Modern Art in New York, which was featured
in The Original Art exhibit of 2021 at the Society of
Illustrators' Museum of Illustration. She lives
and works in Montreal, Canada.
