The Long Game
Disch considers the most important thing to be
meeting clients where they are, and technology
plays a key role in this-whether it's offering
client meetings exclusively on Zoom or finding
ways to keep digital financial documents
safe, simplified, and systematized. Remote client
meetings have facilitated both client onboarding
and client retention. And if clients move out
of the New England area, they can just as easily
stay with Great Point and not have to start
over with a new advisor.
Disch is also keen on finding opportunities to enhance
the digital client experience. He cites
the firm's recent implementation of Vanilla Estate
Planning, an online software that makes it
possible to draft estate plans with a client directly.
He also looks for new technologies that can
streamline practice management and financial
transactions in general, like blockchain. He
considers ethereum a prime opportunity to reduce
friction in the payments industry and hopes the
industry seeks to understand these phenomena
rather than dismiss them as pure novelty.
" The technology is available. It's just about whether
you adopt it, " he says.
Most of all, Disch hopes that the same eye to
the future that fires him up about new technology
can also take hold in clients' overall approach
to portfolio management. While the kind of market
volatility that defined the beginning of his
financial planning career is what his clients worry
about most, Disch maintains that the gradual
diminishing of purchasing power is what hurts
individuals the most over time.

Career path: Graduated from Boston College's
Carroll School of Management in 2002. He first worked
for American Express Financial Advisors (now
under Ameriprise Financial) and attained his certified
financial planner designation in 2005. He opened
Great Point in April 2008.
Personal: Lives in Hingham, Massachusetts, and
works in Boston. Married with three children, ages 14,
13, and 9. Disch is an avid sailor and takes his own
boat to work whenever possible.
Favorite fund families: Avantis, Dimensional,
J.P. Morgan, Janus Henderson, and State Street.
" Everyone is so focused on from month to month
or quarter to quarter, if their account value
went up or down, " he says. " But we should be
more focused on the long term, and the
opportunity cost of not taking enough risk in
your portfolio. " K
