YOUR COMMUNITY Emerging Leader Collaboration Leadership. Professional development. Collaboration. Just a few words that embody the Global Emerging Leaders group, an international community that provides targeted programming to members new to the industry (five or fewer years) and empowers them to take advantage of networking and educational opportunities. Launched last year at the World Education Congress in Vancouver, the group is not restricted to only emerging leaders. It also resounds with senior industry members who want to support emerging leaders in their environment. The group will support chapter boards that want to develop regional-level emerging leader content or programming. Other goals include education through webinars and in-person programs, networking and membership development and industry relations. Look for GEL at the World Education Congress during the GEL Town Hall, where delegates will discuss hot industry topics, report out on the past year’s activities and roll out the schedule for 20112012. Also back this year are the invitation-only GEL receptions (look for dates and times on the WEC calendar). —Elizabeth Baranik In Honor of Vanessa Cotton MPI has established a scholarship for European students in honor of U.K. event industry veteran Vanessa Cotton who passed away in June 2010. The funds will enhance the opportunities presented to young meeting professionals and will create a lasting legacy for a respected industry leader. The scholarship will sponsor registration, accommodations and travel to MPI’s European Meetings & Events Conference (EMEC). Each scholarship collaborator—ExCel London, Reed Travel Expo and the MPI U.K. & Ireland Chapter, will commit €350 for the next five years, with plans to increase fundraising and send more students to EMEC. “This award will recognize the importance of nurturing future talent within the event sector,” said Fiona Pelham, president of the MPI U.K. & Ireland Chapter. “The European Meetings & Events Conference is a fantastic way to build a network and receive key industry education, and it is great that this award will enable a student to have this influential experience.” The Vanessa Cotton Memorial Scholarship opens in September 2011.
