Focus on Storage Focus on Storage Understanding the benefits of System Storage technology verage end users typically don’t care about the source of their data. Their primary concerns are top-level applications and how those applications can further their business goals. But for IT administrators, data management is a top priority. As with their front-office counterparts, they have to support the business, and they realize A information is the backbone of every business. It drives many business decisions, allowing those end users to be proactive and reactive to industry changes and challenges. That’s why IBM has put so much effort into ensuring mainframe data is managed rigorously. One of the tools that allows this is the Data Facility Storage Management Subsystem* (DFSMS), the goal of which is to automatically manage data from creation to expiration. Although DFSMS has been around for years–going back to the multiple visual storage/systems program days in the early 1990s–it’s recently been enhanced to make it easier for data managers to ensure data is available when and where it’s needed, and the data maintains its integrity throughout its lifecycle, no matter where and how it’s stored. This is especially true of the latest release of z/OS* DFSMS, which is now at version 1.10. It has a few new tricks up its sleeves, including enhancements to DFSMS Hierarchical Storage Manager* (DFSMShsm), DFSMS Data Set Services* (DFSMSdss) and DFSMS Removable Media Manager* (DFSMSrmm). The Queen of Tape DFSMShsm is an automated, hierarchical storage manager and productivity tool that supports availability management, space management and disaster recovery. With DFSMS 1.10, DFSMShsm has been enhanced to support NEWNAME, DATE and TIME parameters for data-set backups, allow for the creation of backup versions of specified data sets to make them appear like backups of the data sets specified with NEWNAME, and simplify the process of converting backups of online data sets to DFSMShsm while retaining the availability of the original data sets. Additionally, users can create multiple back-up versions of the same data set using different names, dates and timestamps. ibmsystemsmag.com/mainframe 16 http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/mainframe
