Editor’s Desk Inside this month’s issue Getting Organized? IBM Can Help y first week as managing editor for IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe edition has seemed like a seven-day test of my organizational abilities. I thought I was prepared. I thought my neurotic need to have a place for everything and everything in its place would help me take over the responsibilities of this publication quickly. Because of the complex deadline schedule of a magazine editor, I was dropped into three different issues in various states of completion. I’ve spent most of the week learning where everything goes, deciding how I want my personal files organized, and then rearranging once I discover my system wasn’t working. While the file-folder junkie in me was having a blast grabbing new files and labeling them in thickSharpie lettering, it was actually overwhelming. It seems there’s so much to do, but so many different ways to do it. For example, I don’t know where to file our magazine’s list of IBM acronyms, especially when I’m referencing it every two minutes. Maybe I should glue it to my right hand! Oddly enough, IBM has many solutions that help meet customers’ ever-growing information needs, from storage to security and even simplified data access. K a rl Freu nd , v ice president of st rateg y a nd marketing, System z*, discusses the newly announced IBM System z10* Business Class–a lower-priced, higher-performing sibling of the System z10 Enterprise Class machine. See how your company can save money without sacrificing performance on page 20. IBM recently made its Information Infrastructure announcement, which is detailed in “More Than Marketing,” beginning on page 10. Increasingly, IBM will work one-on-one with clients to help them solve their data problems. It would be as if they were right next to me, telling me how to sort and label all of my files. I also wish my desk followed the storage 2.0 model, which uses two of IBM’s storage solutions. IBM storage specialist Kem Clawson will tell you how to M utilize Diligent* de-duplication technologies and XIV storage areas to transform your information infrastructure in the feature story “Welcome to Storage 2.0,” which starts on page 26. But, what good is stockpiled information if you can’t use it to extract business intelligence (BI)? This issue includes information on deploying BI on a System z platform. See the full story, “BI and the Mainframe” on page 32. Check out these, and other stories inside and on our Web site. I’ve got to get a new Sharpie.
