It’s about time (their joke, not mine) There are a few things I immediately loved about the new time-control features... the first being that all time operations are completely independent of pitch operations, including a totally separate Undo history! You can enable or disable the time section separately from the pitch ‘bypass’, allowing you to use the plug-in for any combination of pitch, time, or simultaneous pitch/time correction. The latter example is where AT7 really shines, as separate pitch and time correction tools are already included in many DAWs. The fact that the pitch curve moves with any timing corrections you make in AT7 allows you to jump between pitch and timing correction with complete integration of the two processes, and separate Undos means you can audition and reject your timing fixes without losing your pitch correction work, or vice versa. My view on this arrangement: when you need it, there’s nothing like it, and when you don’t have it, you’ll really miss it! Working with the time controls in AT7 is a bit different from other time stretching applications, but the workflow seems well suited to working with vocals. There are only two new tools for time correction, the Move Point tool and the Move Region tool. The Move Point tool essentially allows you to define a selection, whose boundaries become the ‘anchor’ points. Now the tool changes so you can click on any point within the selection, and slide that point left or right while the edges of the selection stay put. You are basically creating two anchor points and a third ‘movable’ point between them. The Move Region tool creates two anchor points and two boundaries of a fixed-length yet ‘movable’ region between them, so a syllable, word, or phrase can be slid in time without its own timing changing. See the screenshot above. The Envelope Graph Display (lower waveform display) shows both the ‘before’ and the ‘after’ of any time manipulation, which shows at a glance where things have been time shifted. This is the only visual indication of where you’ve made time edits once they’re done. As you’re working, however, grid reference points and a bar/beat display allow you to easily do things like stretch the end of a syllable to meet a grid point. This system takes a little getting used to, but you will quickly find yourself able to move audio around like putty, a little push here, a little tug there. One limitation you’ll run into that takes some planning to work with: there’s a limit to how far any chunk of your audio file can be stretched—namely, a 10:1 ratio. That seems like a lot at first, but.... Let’s say you’ve selected a word you want to speed up a little. You create a Move Point area around the word, then click on the end of the word to nudge it forward. The entire word is in front of your mouse, being nudged forward and squeezed... but behind it, there may be

only a tiny sliver of audio that’s stretchable! You might find you’ve barely moved the mouse at all before you get the “Time Stretch Limit Reached” flag. The way to get around this limitation is to grab as much silence as possible behind a word you want to move forward significantly, or in front of a word you want to pull back, so you’re giving yourself room to stretch. Thoughts, notes, conclusions You can “Clear All” time (and separately, pitch) correction data, but you won’t get an “Are You Sure?” warning with the time data. Not to worry, it can be undone, but I’d like to see a warning for a global command like that. If there’s one limitation with using AT7 to ‘time align’ one vocal with another, it’s the fact that you can’t see the ‘target’ vocal when aligning the errant vocal. If there was a way to superimpose a different track’s audio waveform with or above/below the current one, this would no longer be an issue. With Pro Tools as my platform, I found myself comparing AT7 to Elastic Audio; I noted that EA can be more flexible for certain time-shifting operations, since you can easily quantize to a grid and compare nearby tracks, etc., but AT7 has a huge advantage in its ability to simultaneously and interactively work on pitch and timing. Without AT7, your workflow must change: do all your tuning, save the results, then go in after timing errors. One final characteristic of AT7 to be aware of is its significant CPU hit. On my fairly modest system, with the two cores’ CPU meters sitting at 15 to 20% each before adding a plug-in, Auto-Tune EVO takes the CPU meters up to around 20-25% each, while Auto-Tune 7 takes them up to 40% and 75% (I’m not sure why it hits the two CPUs differently). Compatibility with old sessions aside, this is a good reason to keep your old versions of AT around! In rereading my session notes and thinking about the AT7 experience, I keep coming back to one inescapable conclusion: having a completely interactive, yet independent, workflow for correcting pitch and time simultaneously is a powerful and intuitive way to work, one that doesn’t force you to think exclusively in pitch terms, then set it all aside to do time fixes, or vice versa. For that reason alone, Auto-Tune 7 is a very important and worthwhile upgrade, and its other improvements are icing on the cake. Prices: Native, $399; TDM + Native, $649; upgrades vary by platform and prior version. More from: Antares, www.antarestech.com.
