It fits quite snugly and is quick and effortless to attach, however it makes the mic a bit top-heavy due to its overall weight, so a high-quality, secure mic stand is essential, and I felt more comfortable with the mic suspended upside down. The included windscreen is yet another evolution/improvement of the one Blue introduced years ago on the Bluebird and continued on the Spark. For the Reactor, it is forward- and rear-adjustable to almost 11/2" away from the capsule, and its front and back halves are joined magnetically so it is literally effortless to set up. A further benefit of this is that if you purchase a second one, you can attach two front halves, one on each side of the mic, for old-school Figure-8 vocal work, one screen for each vocalist facing the mic’s two lobes. Reactions Of course all of this window dressing would be pointless if the mic didn’t sound good. How does it relate to its Blue family members? In price, at $500 street, it sits just above the Bluebird and Baby Bottle, and right below the Dragonfly. Made overseas, but not a budget mic. Unlike the tailored, scooped mids of the Baby Bottle and the exaggerated highs and lows of the Bluebird, the Reactor offers a much more balanced sound. Although I did not have one on hand at the time I did notice that on paper the Reactor’s frequency graphs were indeed quite similar to those of the venerable, and much costlier, Blue Kiwi (reviewed May 2002).

The Reactor offers a classic open sound with a nice touch of smoothness and a focused weighty bottom. It is easily the most natural and well-rounded of the company’s under-$1000 mic offerings, and compared well with similarly priced condensers in my collection. While its mids were pretty evenly matched to those of my Shure KSM44, its high end could best be described as wider sounding. After many tests with electric guitar cabinets, drums, acoustic guitar and other string instruments, no one application stood out in particular—this mic, like any good classic mic, should deliver good results with just about any sound source. If I had to pick one standout source, it would probably be vocals, where it gave a great combination of intimacy and openness. Reactor wrap up Regardless of your personal response to the Reactor’s unconventional appearance, if you get to use one you will come to agree that it can sound good. So what do you get for $500? Quite a bit, actually. I said that about the Spark, and now I’ll say it about the Reactor: Short of one of Blue’s high-end $2000 models, and maybe even because of its $500 price tag, this is one of the most well-rounded Blue mics to date, and it is easily Blue’s best value, dollar for dollar.
