pointer is black on black and you need good lighting to see what you’re doing; the MS position has its own red LED, as does the XY, but you can’t tell if you’re in 2-channel or 4-channel mode. Navigating through the folder structure is trickier than it needs to be, and don’t be in a hurry to select a specific file, you might keep ’em waiting while you hunt... But you can name and rename files to make life easier, also split and delete files, of course. The screen is well done, and when you leave the backlight on at the expense of battery use, you can always check on things in progress. But if you prefer to have it switch itself off after observing the lit screen for a good while, accessing the screen that lets you make the change is a major undertaking in Menu mode. While you’ll do that you’ll create major noises that the sensitive mics will pick up. Mostly you’ll want to use the H2n in a tried-and-true setup and not change horses in midstream; then your recording episodes will be smooth. Perks The H2n has very well implemented speed and pitch controls. The playback pitch can be altered by semitones, and there is no immediate onset of munchkinisms, although like all good things this can be overdone, too. The speed can be changed by tiny increments (percent)—individually or when combined these two options can result in useful changes for practice, take-downs, or when trying out different versions of a song—or for hilarity like having the minute waltz last 40 seconds (at max. speed setting of 150) or listening to a political debate as if the candidates were on helium and speed (who knows?). Markers can be set on the fly, there is a metronome and a tuner, .WAV files can be converted into MP3 files, MS and 4channel files can be made into stereo, prerecording and countoff and autogain can be activated, and much more can be done that will prove useful to the many types of users, from enthusiasts to students and teachers to professional. For professional results, free from contact handling noises, stand mounting and operation with the (optional) remote control will be mandatory. An external mic or even a mixer can be connected, of course. A windscreen and AC adapter are also available options. Summary The H2n brings new options to the table—in lieu of mics that stick out and can be directionally adjusted, the H2n has 5 capsules permanently mounted behind a solid grille, and the choice of recording modes is astounding in a unit of this size and price.
