Yamaha
EAD10
A new, interesting, and
fun twist on drum recording
and sample replacement

I
love multi-miking drums, but I'll admit that often
the setup and tweaking process is a pain. The
Yamaha EAD10 offers a solution in one of the
most unique drum recording and playing devices
I've ever used.
The EAD10 uses a single stereo mic that mounts
on the inner rim of your kick drum and captures
the sound of the whole kit. The miked sound is
then processed and enhanced with your choice of
onboard compression and effects. There's also a
drum trigger built into the mic mount that triggers
chosen kick samples and blends them into the mix.
You can even add up to four more external triggers
to access more sampled sounds (see below).
The system
The stand-mounted EAD10 control module has an alphanumeric
LCD screen and controls for master and click volume, reverb,
effects, and trigger settings. There is a scene selector as well as
soft buttons for various menu functions.
On the back are 1/4" inputs for the EAD10 Sensor Unit,
three additional trigger inputs, a 1/4" footswitch input, and two
USB ports. There are 1/4" stereo outputs, a front-panel 1/4"
headphone output, and an aux input minijack.
The EAD10 sensor unit features an XY stereo mic like those
found on many popular handheld recorders.
The rubber clamp that secures the unit to the drum rim houses
the trigger sensor, and a pair of 1/4" outputs connect to the
brain via included 1/4" balanced cables.
Presets include stadium-sounding drums, processed hip hop kits,
1980s drum machine sounds, weird effects kits, and genres like
jazz, rock, metal, and more. The unit features 757 sample voices
with 64-note polyphony (plus 100 more samples you can import
yourself), plus 11 reverbs, distortion, delay, wah, compression
and flanging. If you hit on a cool groove, you can record and
store it-90 seconds to internal storage, or up to 30 minutes on a
USB flash drive, which you can then overdub with another performance. The other USB port is used for computer connection and
to share beats you've recorded with Yamaha's Rec N' Share app.
Adding pads and sensors
The trigger inputs can be a little confusing at first glance.
The first two (labeled Kick and Snare) are actually dual mono
triggers on stereo jacks. The default setup, with the EAD10
alone, has the Sensor unit's built-in kick trigger acting on Trigger
1, with Trigger 2 unused.
If you purchase a dual-sensor DT50S trigger clamp, attach
it to your snare, and plug it into Trigger 3/4 with a TRS cable,
you'll have triggers for your snare head and rim. However,
if you prefer, those first two trigger inputs can be split with
Y-cables and attached to two single sensors instead. For
example, you could use a Y-cable on Trigger 1/2 and add an
electronic kick pedal to trigger different samples than the ones
the kick sensor is triggering, or you could split Triggers 3 and 4
to trigger two toms, or snare (with no rim) and one tom.
Triggers 5 and 6 aren't used for acoustic drum triggers. Instead,
they're connectors for Yamaha 3-zone drum pads and cymbals
like those in the DTX drum kits. Using these and your choice of
triggers, you can build up a sizable hybrid acoustic/
electronic kit, piece by piece.
Test drive
Yamaha sent me the EAD10
with one DT50S dual-sensor
snare/tom trigger, and initially I
admit I was skeptical. A stereo mic
