“That’s what we preach every day. We preach to take care of our people and our people will take care of our customers.”
JT: The airline industry is in the beginning phases of consolidation around the world, including in South America—how do you see that developing, and is there a spot for a relatively small stand-alone carrier in the world of mega-mergers and global alliances? DN: Sure there is. Eighty-five percent of the traffic in Brazil is domestic. The guy who is flying from Cuiaba to João Pessoa could care less about the global reach of a conglomerate. He wants to be able to fly there instead of going on the bus. For most of the people, that really has no bearing. It makes good sense for TAM and these other guys, but we’re doing just fine without the complications of it.
JT: How has the transition been for you and your family to come to Brazil? What is it like being back? DN: Actually the family still lives in Connecticut, so it’s a transition as I go back and forth. Thank goodness that the flights are overnight and the time difference most of the year is very reasonable—an hour difference. I spend three days a week, three times a month in Brazil, and it works out great.
JT: What are your interests outside of aviation? DN: My family—I have nine kids and three grandkids. So my family is important. I work out—keep myself in good shape. Other than that, I don’t have a lot of time to do much else. My life centers around my family.
