North America: Still Attractive After All Those Y ears

Kit t y Hawk, Nor t h C arolina, 17 December 1903: Two strange Americans were the first people to fly an airplane and start the modern age of aviation. This was before television, Internet and other inventions of Al Gore, so few people heard of their achievement. As a matter of fact, in 1904 Santos Dumont, a legendary Brazilian living and flying in France was hosted by President Teddy Roosevelt as the first man to fly. Little did the President of the United States know about the Wright brothers and their adventures of being the first to fly a heavier-than-air vehicle. Since that day, the United States played forever the pre-eminent role in aviation, dominating its developments for decades. In 1960, as one example, U.S. airlines carried more than half of the world traffic at 57.4 percent. The United States invented most aircraft but also pioneered various airline inventions like low-cost carriers, yield management and bad service.
