ISTAT recognizes the late Henry Hubschman for his role in the aviation industry
Jetrader spoke with current GECAS President and CEO, Norman Liu, who succeeded Henry Hubschman about three years ago. The focus was on his experience and memories of working with Hubschman, as well as the former CEO’s influence on the company’s current goals and vision. Jetrader: ISTAT has awarded Henry Hubschman the ISTAT Award for his service to and excellence in the aviation industry. You’ve been with GECAS since 1995—can you tell us about Hubschman’s vision for the company and his leadership at GECAS and in the aviation industry? Norman Liu: Henry was President and CEO from 1997 to 2009. When he joined GECAS, we had a lot of basic strategies in place. I think what Henry did was push us to be a great team and industry leader. He stretched our goals, and we moved up to investing about $6 billion to $7 billion a year. That helped drive our asset growth from about $10 billion when he started to $45 billion a few years ago. He had a real focus and sense of urgency on the speed of conducting business and dealing with customers. He also was a good personal example for all of us in that he had high energy, but he also could show steady, calm leadership during tough times, like the post-9/11 phase. As you know, Henry had personal health challenges, and we all admired the way he handled those at the same time he juggled his demanding job. Jetrader 11
