Jetrader had the chance to speak with Hazy after the panel for a follow-up discussion on the state of the aviation industry and his upcoming plans since retiring from ILFC. Interview conducted by Marco Sterk, The Longbow Group, LLC Jetrader: Is the re-engining option for current narrow-body aircraft offered by Boeing and Airbus a smart move for these manufacturers, the lessors and the airlines? Steven F. Udvar-Hazy: It is a boon, but I’m not sure that we can yet validate the economic benefits, because you have to trade off a desire on the part of the manufacturer for higher price, because they want to get something for that benefit—with the operating cost benefit for the airlines. And so you’ve got the initial capital costs, and it’s quite uncertain at this juncture, since this new engine technology is not certified yet, what will be the actual cost of maintaining the engine over its full life not just the first couple of years. Will they have the reliability?; will they have the component lives that we’ve gotten used to with the CFM56 and the V2500? And nobody can answer those questions. So, as an aircraft owner/investor, it’s very hard to measure the value of that re-engined plane. Is it worth a million more? $5 million Jetrader 9
