J: The CRJ1000 NextGen is now halfway through its flight testing program with certification and first delivery now planned for first quarter 2010. MyAir, who declared bankruptcy on July 24, had ordered 15 aircraft out of a total global order of 64 CRJ1000. Has this bankruptcy affected your plans, and with the CSeries entering service in only four years, what do you see as the future market outlook for the CRJ1000? BB: As far as MyAir goes, we’re watching the situation along with the rest of the world and decided to cancel the order for its CRJ1000 aircraft; we’re still working to get new customers, as we would be with any program. For the four-year timeline, I think it’s important to point out that we don’t see the CSeries and the CRJ1000 competing with each other; we see them in two different market segments. We see the CRJ1000 as being an extension of the regional jet market segment, and its primary target customer base would be customers who already have CRJ200s, 700s, 900s, who are getting an extension of their scope clauses or who are getting the ability to fly slightly larger planes or are seeking a 90-seat dual-class airplane. The CSeries is targeted more as a mainline—or as some call it, a narrow-body airplane—that’s more focused on replacement of the larger Avro BA146-300, DC-9, the classic 737, the MD-80s that market segment. As a result, we don’t see the two competing with one another, and they have two separate future market outlooks. We categorize the CRJ more with our regional aircraft, which also has an extremely strong outlook market outlook, looking well over 5,800 units. J: What about the perception that the CRJ1000 is thought of as an interim aircraft? BB: That is something I’d love to make sure gets corrected; it’s not an interim aircraft at all. The customers who are seeking the CRJ1000 are usually not seeking a CSeries. There are always a few customers who are really bold who get into the narrow-body market and the regional jet market—some carriers do all their purchasing as one—but in terms of the end users, they’re typically always going to be different, so it should not be viewed as an interim airplane. J: How is the CSeries development coming along, and where do you see the largest regional market for this airplane? BB: The development itself is moving along very well; everything is on track for our first deliveries in 2013. We have just completed our joint-conceptual-definition phase earlier this year—a major milestone for bringing the airplane one step closer to reality. We, today, have more than 900 Bombardier employees in the building I’m in here in Montreal. We’ve got almost 300 supplier employees in this building too. Basically, all systems are go; we’re well into our joint-definition phase right now, and we’re Jetrader 9
