What started as a disappointment turned into a fantastic
partnership," explains Libby Patrick, president of Atlantabased Sims Patrick Studio, of the $30 million head-to-toe
renovation of South Carolina's Sonesta Resort Hilton Head
Island. The fi rm was previously on the shortlist to renovate a
package of hotels for owner Hospitality Properties Trust (HPT),
but the projects were awarded to another fi rm. However, a few
months later, HPT, which had by then acquired the Sonesta
Collection brand, approached Sims Patrick Studio about "a fasttrack project that might be a perfect fit for our company," she
says. "We started right away on the fastest project schedule we
have ever completed"-the entire renovation was done in just
one year.
Patrick describes the resort's new aesthetic (the renovation
included all interior and exterior public spaces-including
the lobby, bar and lounge, library, restaurant, spa, indoor and
outdoor pool areas, outdoor event pavilion, 20,000 square feet of
meeting space, and 340 guestrooms and suites) as "casual coastal
modern with a European twist." The designers, who always
