Th is newly overhauled incarnation of the 231-room Embassy
Row-part of the Destination Hotels collection-indeed reflects
the vibrancy of surrounding Dupont Circle. Targeting the global
thinking modern traveler, it was conjured as a chic and familiar
pied-à-terre that encourages guests to explore and ponder, "'Where
might this have come from or what was this inspired by?'" says
Shanahan. "Woven throughout is an appreciation for both the local
culture and distant places. We focused on a curated style, one that
is gathered from experiences and environments." Tiles are printed
with book patterns, for example, while artwork pays homage to the
hotel's past as a hotbed of political scandal.
In the guestrooms, a cool palette of blue and gray is brightened
through pops of yellow and "no two items are alike and speak
to different eras" yet mesh to elicit a unique residential vibe,
Shanahan says. Distinctive elements like the lobby's high-end stone

floor were intended to transport guests, she adds, offering "a sense
of arrival, as if coming through the entry of a good friend's home."
Shanahan's team also sought out "materials with impact such as
a metallic cherry blossom graphic and married them with more
humble ones including limestone to create interest and energy."
The lobby, reconfigured to become a socially active hub, was
raised one level to accommodate the lively bar at Station Kitchen
& Cocktails as well as a 24-hour chef 's pantry. Here, a cherry
blossom sculpture is a dynamic highlight, "allowing the guest
to engage and experience it from all angles." But during nice
weather, it's the lush rooftop with mirrors amplifying the pool
and cabanas, or the front terrace overlooking Massachusetts
Avenue where most patrons congregate. The latter provides "a
bird's nest view of all that transpires below," says Shanahan. "It's
voyeurism at its best." ❙❘❚
