Nashville. On the boards: several San Francisco boutique newcomers
and the forthcoming JW Marriott Monterrey in Mexico.
The financial crisis, in a way, actually helped shape Sem Fim's
ethos. A cost-saving approach to business was dictated by necessity
at first; it then became a viable way to grow the company. "One of
our core values is to stay very lean and our sales proposition is to
elevate affordably," says Ani. For example, Sem Fim automatically
presents product samples in shades that are lighter and darker than
the desired hue, because it saves time and money down the road
as clients deliberate during the decision-making process. Noble
sustainability efforts also reduce the budget. The addition of a Mexico
facility-all Sem Fim factories are certified to U.S. standards-shaves
off lead times and miles, particularly for robust business conducted in
California and Houston, all the while reducing carbon emissions.
Reflective of this eco-friendly spirit, in 2017 Sem Fim introduced
doors fashioned from reclaimed wood sourced from the likes of old

railroad tracks and barns in China and Mexico and engineered its own
stainless steel and black iron hardware. A complementary veneer that
mimics reclaimed wood, appearing more natural than synthetic, is in
the works. Sem Fim also recently debuted a cement series in quartz.
"A lot of the surfaces now are trending toward quartz versus natural
stone and granite. For a long time we have seen these concrete
tops that are so gorgeous but stain and absorb oils," Ani says. This
alternative grainy surface, available in four different shades of gray,
imitates concrete and promises durability.
Throughout their years working in the hospitality sphere, Ani
notices that the biggest shift is a predilection for goods that are a
necessity, their design solely heightening the guest experience. "We
used to see these intricate designs just for the sake of it being an
intricate design," she remembers. "Now it's all about highly effective
design with simplified elegance. Ease of use is more present in the
minds of designers than I've ever seen."
