London Calling
CetraRuddy brings British pop culture to a Midtown Manhattan eatery

C

harged with designing restaurant group D&D London's
first location in the United States, an iteration of its
popular Bluebird Chelsea in London, designers at New
York-based CetraRuddy faced several challenges. "The biggest
was that it was new for us to take on a project where we weren't
also creating the brand," says principal Nancy Ruddy. She and her
team, which included senior associate Sodam Ha, boned up on
the story behind the original locale-a listed Art Deco garage on
tony Kings Road where the famed Bluebird K7 race car was once
housed. "We did a lot of research on the car itself, as well as its
designer and driver, Donald Campbell, and the era of the '40s and
'50s, which was an innovative time when the stage for the Mods
and the Beatles was set," she says. "We considered how to bring

that inception to Midtown Manhattan-we wanted it to be a cousin
but not a replica."
Another challenge was avoiding design tropes like "red
telephone booths and Union Jacks," says Ruddy. "The London
restaurant makes good use of a rich palette of patterns and colors
and textures, so that was a more important reference for us. It also
features an enormous skylight with live trees thriving underneath."
While the New York space didn't have such an advantage, it did
offer to-die-for views of Columbus Circle and the canopy of Central
Park spreading beyond it. Two full-height silk trees now "blooming"
in the dining room pick up on that green experience and pay
homage to the celebrated British love of gardening.
