STUDIOS Architecture draws from a Parisian staple in an office tower turned bright hotel

J

ust beyond the 12th arrondissement Gare de Lyon-one of the
city's most hectic railway stations-is the historic eastern Paris
neighborhood that inspired Philippe Jouanneault when
designing the adjacent Courtyard by Marriott Gare de Lyon.
"A few steps away is the Rue Crémieux, with its colorful facades
from which we drew the yellow that pervades the whole project,"
explains the associate principal at the Paris office of STUDIOS
Architecture. "A little further are the Viaduc des Arts, old archways
filled with craftsmen's workshops and studios, ranging from
cabinetmakers to goldsmiths. These artisans and their know-how
were the subjects of the photo series you can see throughout the
hotel, which we commissioned from a local artist. Running above
the Viaduc, a former railway track has been transformed into a
Coulée verte, a magical green walk that stretches over one-and-ahalf kilometers."

Over the course of two years Jouanneault and his team
renovated the Tour Paris Lyon, an office tower that ironically was
first conceived, yet never served, as a hotel. Given the building's
floor plates and core, a conversion into the 249-room Courtyard by
Marriott property was made somewhat easier, Jouanneault says.
Light rails sweeping across the hotel's exterior mimic the nearby
train tracks and spawn a motif that translates to the interiors too,
including the cladding of the striking corridor past the entrance, as
well as lighting, bespoke furnishing details, and even doorknobs.
In the guestrooms, dramatic views of Paris are taken in through
windows that STUDIOS Architecture opened as structurally wide
as possible. The Parisian sky is also echoed in the subtle colors of
the custom-designed rugs.
"One of the key innovations was that the bathrooms were fully
built and assembled in Portugal and were then plugged into the
