Hot Enough
H
ow hot has it been this
summer? Let me count the
ways. England just set a new
high-temperature mark of
104.5 degrees F, obliterating
the previous record by nearly three degrees.
In France, spectators dropped from heat
stroke along roadsides as they awaited their
favorite bike racers in the annual Tour de
France. In late July, China issued its highest-level
severe-heat warnings for nearly
70 cities that faced temperatures in excess
of 104 degrees F, heat that was expected to
afflict some areas for weeks. Here at home,
wave after wave of hot weather has seared
almost every corner of the country, at times
placing more than 100 million people under
heat advisories. In Kansas, thousands of
head of cattle were dumped into a landfill
after perishing from heat stroke.
The heat is also stoking wildfires across
Europe and North America. In Alaska, wildfires
have already burned an area the size of
Connecticut. As we wrapped this issue of the
magazine, the Oak Fire was flaring on the
outskirts of California's Yosemite National
Park, prompting now-familiar reactions to
its sudden and aggressive growth. " The fire
behavior that we're seeing on this incident
is really unprecedented, " a Cal Fire battalion
chief told CNN. " It's moving extremely fast,
and the reaction time to get people out is
limited because that fire is moving so fast. "
While world leaders search for the political
will to address the fossil-fuel emissions
that are warming the planet, the wildfires
will continue. So will the hurricanes,
typhoons, tornados, drought, and other
extreme natural events exacerbated by a
warming climate. As this " new normal "
simply becomes normal-as fraught and
alarming as that may be-the safety and
responder communities will be called
upon to devise new modes of planning and
response and amend existing methods in an
attempt to keep pace with this shifting reality.
Standards development organizations
have an opportunity to play a critical role in
these efforts, and to perhaps even lend their
voices to the growing chorus urging political
leaders to act. How hot is hot enough?

on the contents of the code. Article
690 is not new to the code and has existed
as part of the NEC for some time. A new
section, 690.4(G), pending addition within
the article, will address photovoltaic installations
on bodies of water.
Our summer issue " Outreach " column
on sprinkler protection for animal housing
facilities included an inaccurate reference
to NFPA 150, Fire and Life Safety in Animal
Housing Facilities Code. The code is in fact
not referenced in the International Building
Code.
