occupants at a second-floor window.
Firefighting crews positioned a ladder
to a balcony on the second floor of the
house and evacuated the occupants to
safety.
One of the occupants was transferred
to the hospital for evaluation.
A second alarm was requested, and
additional units responded to the
scene.
Reports indicated that crews were
able to bring the fire under control
before completing extinguishment.
Crews discovered a cat inside the home
that had died of injuries related to the
fire.
The two occupants were said to be
sleeping at the time of the fire before
being awakened by a smoke alarm.
Smoke conditions prevented them from
exiting through the first floor.
Fire investigators determined that
the fire began in a garage and was
related to the electrical system of a
motorcycle that was being charged by a
trickle charger.
The fire caused an estimated
$253,550 in damage.
VIRGINIA
Unattended candle causes house
fire, injuring two
A late-night house fire that injured two
occupants was caused by the ignition
of curtains by an unattended candle,
according to a fire department press
release.
Firefighters were dispatched at
approximately 9:10 p.m. by a report of
a house fire, and arriving units found
smoke showing from a two-story,
single-family home. Crews worked to
locate and extinguish the fire, which
originated in the first-floor living room.
Two occupants who were in the
house at the time of the fire were
transported to the hospital for evaluation
of injuries that were described as
non-life-threatening.
One of the occupants reportedly
discovered the fire before the home's
smoke alarms sounded. Both occupants
evacuated the residence before calling
911.
According to investigators, the occupants
were using candles to provide

residence to lose power. A fire began
when an unattended candle ignited
curtains in the living room.
The fire department provided the
public with safety tips for candle use,
including keeping combustible materials
away from open flames, never
leaving candles unattended while
burning, and placing candles on flat
surfaces in glass or ceramic containers
away from windows or doorways.
Damage from the fire was estimated
at $25,000.
WISCONSIN
Stovetop burner causes minor fire in
apartment
A residential kitchen fire was caused by
the accidental ignition of an appliance
placed on top of a stove.
According to a fire department press
release, firefighters were dispatched
at 12:06 p.m. and arrived at the scene
of a multiunit apartment building.
Crews learned from the occupant that
she had already extinguished the fire
with an extinguisher that was kept in a
common hallway in the building.
Firefighters confirmed that the fire
was out and ventilated smoke from the
apartment and adjacent hallway.
The occupant told firefighters that
she had placed the microwave on top of
the stove while cleaning it and believed
that she must have accidentally turned
on the stovetop burner. The fire was
said to have caused minor damage to
the bottom of the microwave.
There were no injuries reported.
