Fire department crews were dispatched at 2 p.m. by a reported residential structure fire. Reports indicated that the fire was located at the rear of a residence. The first firefighting crews reached the scene within five minutes of dispatch and reported moderate smoke conditions from a walkout basement located at the rear of the one-story residence. Crews initiated search-and-rescue operations and an aggressive interior fire attack with a preconnected hose line. Crews were able to quickly contain the fire to a basement family room. The fire was brought under control within five minutes. During operations, firefighters determined that all occupants had been able to evacuate the structure without injuries. Investigators determined that the fire was caused by smoking materials. The residence was equipped with working smoke alarms, which were credited with alerting occupants. Damage from the fire was estimated at $5,000. Educational WISCONSIN Fire in university lab forces building evacuation An oven fire in a university laboratory was extinguished by firefighters but drew a full structure fire response. Crews were dispatched at 1:20 p.m. Arriving crews reported that no smoke or fire was showing from a five-story building from which occupants were evacuating. A building manager met with crews outside the building and reported that there was an active fire in one of the building's rooms. According to a press release from the fire department, an engine company upgraded the call to a full structure fire response and requested that additional companies respond to the scene. Crews from the engine company proceeded to the room, where they found that a sprinkler located above an oven had activated and was controlling the fire. The oven was reported to be open and a small amount of fire could be seen inside. Crews extinguished the remaining fire with a water can extinguisher, then shut down the sprinkler system and assisted with ventilation. Investigators learned that plastic items that were not oven-safe had been accidentally placed in the oven. The fire flared up when a lab worker investigated smoke in the room and opened the oven door, allowing oxygen into the oven. Attempts by lab staff to extinguish the fire with a dry chemical extinguisher were unsuccessful and the fire alarm was pulled to initiate evacuation of the building.
