members and learned that one resident
was still inside the house. Firefighters
attempted to rescue the occupant, but
the reports indicated that she was pronounced
dead at the scene. Another
family member was reported to have
been transported to the hospital for
treatment of smoke inhalation injuries.
Investigators determined that the
fire ignited in the garage where a lithium
ion battery used to power a hobby
aircraft was being charged. The battery
was resting on a poly-foam recliner
cushion. Thermal runaway caused the
battery to ignite and then burn into
the seat cushion, eventually causing
flashover in the garage, which was congested
with stored materials, including
10 gallons of gasoline.
Smoke detectors on the main floor
of the house failed to operate because
they were not equipped with batteries.
Detection of the fire was delayed due to
the remote location of the smoke detector
in the attic.
According to investigators, the
female victim had a mobility disability
that prevented escape. There was also
said to be very little floor space in the
residence due to hoarding conditions.
The residence was a single-story
wood-frame structure with a brick
veneer. The structure occupied a
ground floor area of 3,156 square feet
(293 square meters).
The fire caused an estimated
$100,000 in damage to the house,
valued at $200,000, and $30,000 in
damage to contents, valued at $50,000.

Cooking materials blamed for fatal
fire that kills three
An adult and two children died in an
early morning house fire that started in
the kitchen.
The fire department was dispatched
to the scene at 3:13 a.m. following a 911
call by a neighbor who observed smoke
coming from the top of the two-story
residence. Arriving crews reported that
the house was fully involved with fire,
making entry impossible. Crews laid
over 1,000 feet of hoses as they fought a
defensive attack.
Following extinguishment, firefighters
found the bodies of an adult and
two children on the second floor. They
reported that the adult had safely evacuated
a third child from the residence
through a rear entrance and went
back inside to retrieve the others. All
three became trapped when smoke and
flames blocked a stairwell.
Investigators determined that the fire
began in the kitchen when a pan ignited
while an occupant was cooking. The
occupant attempted to move the pan to
the sink, but flaming material spilled
from the pan and ignited combustible
material on the floor. Fire also spread
from the pan and ignited curtains above
the sink. Investigators were uncertain
how long the fire had been burning
before it was detected by the neighbor.
