detection equipment.
The house was a two-story wood
structure with a roof covered by asphalt
shingles. It occupied a ground floor area
of 1,360 square feet (126 square meters).
The house and its contents, together
valued at $318,400, were a total loss.
COLORADO
Arson blamed for house fire that
kills five
An overnight house fire that claimed
the lives of five occupants was determined
to be intentionally set, according
to news reports. Three occupants were
also injured after reportedly jumping
from an upper floor.
A police officer on patrol spotted the
fire at 2:40 a.m. and summoned the
fire department to the scene. According
to news reports, the officer attempted
a rescue effort but was driven back by
flames.
The reports indicated that all of the
victims were found on the first floor of
the residence.
Reports said that police and fire
officials had opened a homicide investigation
into the fire. Two teenagers
were later arrested and charged in
connection with the fire, according to
subsequent reports. A third suspect was
charged in juvenile court.
The residence was a two-story,
single-family home of unprotected
wood-frame construction. The ground
floor area was not reported.
MASSACHUSETTS
Chemical storage in apartment
causes fire that injures 10 firefighters
Ten firefighters suffered chemical burn
injuries while responding to a fire in
an unoccupied apartment in a building
that was used to house college students.
The fire department was called to
the scene following a 911 call shortly
after midnight from a neighbor who
reported excessive smoke in the multiunit
building. Arriving crews found
smoke pushing up through the floor of
a vacant unit on the fourth floor. Crews
cut the floor and pulled boards to
expose the void space, then pulled the
ceiling from below to gain access to the
void space where the fire was located.
Crews applied water to the area with
a water extinguisher and stretched
hose lines to the fourth-floor unit and
the unit directly below. The injured
firefighters were exposed to unknown
chemicals as they pulled flooring and
when it leaked through the flooring
into the third-floor unit.
The firefighters, who suffered burns
when the chemicals penetrated their
gloves and hoods, exited the building
and flushed the exposed areas with
water. Crews removed their exposed
gear before being transported to
the hospital. The contaminated gear
was isolated in a staging area while
arrangements were made for a private
