1 WHAT IS ACUTE MYELOID LEUKEMIA
(AML)?
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common acute
leukemia affecting adults.1
It occurs when a mutation or genetic
change takes place in the DNA of a bone marrow cell and affects
a certain type of white blood cell.
2 HOW IS AML TREATED?
Current treatments for AML include chemotherapy, radiation
therapy, and stem cell transplant.2
Targeted therapies, such as
monoclonal antibodies, are also being evaluated in clinical trials
for the treatment of AML. Treatment options for AML can often
be affected by the patient's age and overall state of health, as well
as other characteristics.
The main treatment for most types of AML is chemotherapy,
along with a targeted therapy drug.3
The treatment for adult
AML usually has two phases:2
Phase 1: Remission Induction Therapy
The goal of this phase is to kill the leukemia cells in the blood
and bone marrow and hopefully put the leukemia into remission.
Phase 2: Post-Remission Therapy
This phase begins after the leukemia is in remission to kill
any remaining leukemia cells that may not be active but could
develop and become active.
3 WHAT IS MOLECULAR PROFILING?
Molecular profiling or mutational testing allows for more
targeted and personalized treatment options. It's important for
patients to have open and candid conversations about molecular
profiling.
4 WHAT IS ACUTE LYMPHOBLASTIC
LEUKEMIA (ALL)?
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a rapidly progressing
cancer that starts in the bone marrow and spreads to the blood.4
5 HOW IS ALL TREATED?
ALL treatment typically involves three phases that can last two to
three years and be affected by the patient's ALL subtype, age, and
overall health status.5
Phase 1: Induction
The goal of this phase is to clear leukemia cells from the bone
marrow. At the end of the induction phase, normal bone marrow
should recover and make blood. A hospital stay may be required
for most of this phase.4
Phase 2: Consolidation
This phase starts after there is complete remission to increase
the chance of a cure.4
Treatment during this phase is given at
a higher dose to kill any leukemic cells that may remain in the
body.
Phase 3: Maintenance
The goal of this phase is to ensure that ALL does not return.
While treatment can last a while, it is given in an outpatient
setting.4

6 WHAT IS ABSOLUTE NEUTROPHIL
COUNT (ANC)?
Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) is a lab calculation that helps
determine your ability to fight infection. Neutrophils are bacteria
that kill white blood cells and their values are counted as part of
the Complete Blood Count (CBC), which is a lab test that will be
frequently administered during your course of chemotherapy.
