Care That's On Your Side
7 HOW DO YOU CALCULATE YOUR ANC?
To calculate your ANC, add the percentage of segmented
neutrophils and bands together, then multiply by the white blood
cell count.
If your ANC value is 500 or lower, you are at an increased risk
for infection. This is also known as neutropenia. If you are
neutropenic, your physician may delay chemotherapy until your
ANC value increases. Neutropenia is an expected side effect
that may occur after receiving chemotherapy. While you are
neutropenic, it is very important to stay away from crowds and
other people that may be sick.

11 WHY IS A SECOND OPINION IMPORTANT?
When you are facing a cancer diagnosis, it is normal to have
questions and wonder if there is additional information another
doctor could provide. You might want to consider seeking a
second opinion on your test results, treatment options, or just
a varying perspective. Reasons you might consider a second
opinion include:
* You want to be aware of all your options
* You have a rare cancer
* You think there are other treatments available
* Your doctor does not have previous experience with your
cancer
* There are uncertainties in the information you initially
received
* Your insurance company would like you to get a second
opinion
* You or a loved one wants peace of mind that the diagnosis is
certain
12 TIPS TO MANAGING COLLEGE WHILE ON
TREATMENT
The unique challenges and needs of young adult patients
with cancer can affect personal, financial, emotional,
and medical well-being. To ensure you are properly
informed, young adult patients, caregivers, and their
families should consider the following issues prior
to choosing a treatment plan with your doctor:
* Insurance coverage
* Limited family support compared to childhood
* Extensive time in the hospital for inpatient treatment
* Fertility concerns
* Adherence issues, diminished sense of autonomy and
independence, feelings of isolation from peers, or threats to
educational attainment and cancer trajectory
13 TIPS TO MANAGING WORK WHILE ON
TREATMENT
* Be your own best advocate. Communication with your
healthcare team is important, and your input on decisions can
help ensure you receive the best care possible.6
* Prepare for your appointments. Be aware of any preappointment
restrictions (such as diet), write down any
symptoms you may be experiencing, and plan your questions
in advance.7
* Take notes during medical visits. Capture what is discovered
or discussed at visits with your healthcare providers so that
you can remember it and maintain records that may be useful
later.6
* Explore programs for patients with cancer. Major medical
centers and nonprofit organizations offer activities and
services.7
