MY LIFE MATTERS
ADVOCACY IN ACTION | FALL 2023
pril 2000, one week after my
eighth-grade graduation. I
was a shy, yet joyful 13-yearold
patiently awaiting high
school. One day while watching
TV, my Mom joined me on the sofa. She
told me that she had been going to a few
medical appointments without my knowledge.
She said the doctors told her that she
has what they call " Cancer, " but she is calling
it a small fight that she is going to win.
Within weeks, my Mom received a mastectomy.
This was soon followed by chemotherapy
and radiation. As a fresh teen, I really
did not pay attention to details. I knew that
my Mom was having surgery, losing her
hair, and would be spending a lot of time in
the bathroom.
I would always tell people that my
Mom's diagnosis forced me to mature
much faster than the average teen. " Cancer "
stripped me of my innocence. I spent
so many hours in chemotherapy treatment
centers and radiation appointments. Man,
what a time! I remember always looking
forward to the box lunches. The nurses
would always give me my own, but my
Mom would also sneak hers to me because
the smell of the sandwiches would
make her sick.
Fast forward to August 2005, after a
brief remission, my Mom noticed something
on her chest that resembled a rash.
