Plenary Speakers OPENING PLENARY Monday, september 13 N GENERAL PLENARY II Tuesday, september 14 N 8:30 am – 10:00 am 8:30 am - 10:00 am RACHEL NAOMI REMEN MD In the Presence of Mystery: Recognizing Wonder in Our Daily Work As an internationally-known physician and teacher, Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen has spent a lifetime immersed in the world of academia and science. Yet twenty-five years of caring for people and their families at the edge of life has shown her that death is both a time of clarity and a time of mystery. Those who accompany people to the edge of life may find there a deeper sense of life’s mystery, majesty and meaning and develop the wisdom to live in deeper and more fulfilling ways. Drawing from her experience as a therapist to people facing death and their families, Dr. Remen will share stories of death, healing and mystery to enable us to revisit our unanswered questions and strengthen a sense of aliveness, wonder and awe in our daily work. Come prepared to encounter the unknown, to wonder, and to see yourself and your work differently. OBJECTIVES: C Discuss the importance of story to understanding JIM PACE DSN, RN, MDIV, ANP, BC, FAANP Lessons From the Pain Clinic Applied to Palliative Care A new faculty practice placement in a cancer pain clinic yields tremendous new practical knowledge regarding pain and symptom management for healthcare professionals. In this presentation, Dr. Pace will recount some of his learning experiences in regard to pain and symptom (constipation) management and how these directly impact palliative care practices. Using evidence-based literature, personal experiences and anecdotal reports from patients and families, pain can be better managed and constipation rendered less burdensome — key quality outcomes for the provision of palliative care. OBJECTIVES: C Discuss the components of a comprehensive pain assessment C Explain various ways to ascertain a patient’s true experience of pain C Describe barriers and facilitators related to excellent pain control C Interpret the evidence related to the control of the people and their families facing the end of life C Construct new understandings about mystery at the end of life C Acquire new perspectives on your work at the end of life symptom of constipation in patients who use opiates for the control of chronic pain C Describe the barriers and facilitators related to diagnosing and evaluating the severity of constipation management of pain and constipation RACHEL NAOMI REMEN MD Dr. Remen is Clinical Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the UCSF School of Medicine. She is Director of the innovative UCSF course, The Healer’s Art, presently taught in 60 medical schools nationwide. She is Co-Founder and Medical Director of the Commonweal Cancer Help Program featured in the groundbreaking Bill Moyers PBS series, Healing and the Mind. She is Founder and Director of the Institute for the Study of Health and Illness at Commonweal, a post-graduate and undergraduate program for physicians who wish to reclaim their calling and integrate Hippocratic values into their work. Dr. Remen has a 55-year personal history of Crohn’s disease and her work is a unique blend of the viewpoint of physician and patient. She is the author of the New York Times bestseller Kitchen Table Wisdom and the national bestseller My Grandfather’s Blessings, which have been published in 18 languages. Dr. Remen is the recipient of three honorary degrees and recently was recognized with the Bravewell Award as one of the earliest Pioneers of Holistic and Integrative Medicine. C Recognize the roles of integrative health in the JAMES C. PACE DSN, RN, MDIV, ANP, BC, FAANP Dr. Pace is the coordinator of the Adult Nurse Practitioner Program with a palliative care focus, which was awarded a four year advanced education nursing grant by the Department of Health and Human Services, the Health Resources and Services Administration (2004-2008). Dr. Pace holds a BA from The University of the South at Sewanee, BSN from Florida State, MSN and MDiv degrees from Vanderbilt, and a DSN from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Pace is a board certified adult nurse practitioner and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Pace’s faculty practice role involves a 40% time commitment to the Ingram Cancer Center at Vanderbilt where he serves as an adult nurse practitioner in the outpatient pain and symptom management clinic. Dr. Pace’s research and scholarly activities lie in the areas of spirituality/religion and health, palliative/hospice care, and HIV/AIDS and spirituality. Dr. Pace is also an Episcopal priest who serves the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee in various roles and capacities. 12 Performing in the Key of E: Excellence in Interdisciplinary Care
