Why Hospice?
NCHPP Chair
NCHPP’s 2010 Section Leaders Look Back
NHPCO’s National Council of Hospice and Palliative Professionals is comprised of 15 disciplinespecific “sections” that represent end-of-life interdisciplinary care. Under the leadership of section leaders, these sections lend expertise to NHPCO on a variety of projects within and across disciplines. Here we salute NCHPP’s 2010 section leaders, who devote significant time—on a voluntary basis—to support their colleagues and advance the field. In addition to sharing their professional backgrounds, however, we also find out what drew them to hospice, and what many of them do to find personal balance in their busy lives.

“Before joining HWR, I was assistant director of health information services for a local hospital, but knew that role was not the right fit—I wanted to work directly with patients and be in a position where I could make a difference. I returned to school and earned a master’s degree in nonprofit management and, with that, felt ready to seek a position with a small nonprofit where I could meet my personal goals. HWR was just down the street from the hospital where I had worked and I thought, ‘Let me give it a try.’ Now, 17 years later, I feel I am still making a difference. This desire plays out in other parts of my life as well. I work with the elderly as a volunteer in nursing homes, I offer parenting instruction for former substance abusing mothers, and I’ve enjoyed working with my colleagues on many NHPCO projects, particularly the Inclusion and Access Toolbox. I’ve always been very aware of the many disenfranchised groups in our society and see myself as an advocate for all of them.” Shareefah on the grounds of the Apartheid Museum during a trip to South Africa in 2005.
“I was drawn to hospice care after I observed how a hospice team in 1991 supported my great-aunt Helen, and how they interacted with our entire family—my great-uncle as well as my wife, my two sons, and me. I was deeply impressed with the patient and family model of care, and how the hospice team was interested in us “as the family” during her final months. As a result, I started out as a social worker with hospice care in 1995, went into full-time ministry from there, and then my journey brought me back to hospice and palliative care eight years ago as the CEO for the Hospice of North Central Oklahoma.” Greg has enjoyed playing the piano since his teenage years, and still makes time to play for his church—and, when coaxed, weddings, funerals and banquets!
