4 January 2010 Strategic Accomplishments in 2009 M Strategic Plan for 2010-2012 On a personal note, I am awaiting the birth of my ﬁ rst grandchild who is expected to arrive in just a few weeks! For my daughter and son-in-law, the last nine months have been a wonderful experience—none of the typical morning sickness and loads of anticipation and planning. By Don Schumacher NHPCO President/CEO As I write this message for this particular issue, which by tradition looks back over our work during the last year, I cannot help but draw parallels between this very personal experience and what has been a tumultuous time for our ﬁeld. The last year has been unique. As we were navigating the new Hospice CoPs at the start of 2009, we were also battling the scheduled elimination of the Medicare BNAF that would reduce hospice revenue by $2.9 billion! In February, we were victorious, with a one-year moratorium enacted by the new Obama Administration and, by August, had earned a greater victory: while the BNAF would not be halted, the elimination would be phased out over a seven-year period, giving hospice providers time to plan for and absorb the cut.
