Short Takes continued One Bike, One Cause—One Uplifting Journey Twenty-seven year old J.W. Frye is now on the road, his bike to be exact. He started his journey on February 23 in Key West, Florida, and has already ridden to Washington, DC, where he met with staff from NHPCO and its three affiliate organizations. Now he is headed for Nashville, where he will be welcomed by Alive Hospice and members of that community. Then he is back on his bike, with plans to ride to Denver, Portland and Seattle—and other cities and towns in between—to his final destination of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. A bike trip of roughly 7,500 to 8,000 miles that he hopes to complete in six months. J.W. wants to pay it forward. He lost both of his parents to cancer, with his mother, Tara Mullin Wright, succumbing to the disease in 2006 while under the care of St. Luke’s Hospice in Bethlehem, PA. His family’s experience with hospice care during her illness was healing. “A fractured family came together,” he said. “Hospice gave her a will to live that she wouldn’t have had otherwise.” Through this very inspirational cross-continental journey, which he has named “Let Me Go,” he hopes to increase national different hospices along the way and, depending on each hospice’s interest, participate in or simply inspire them to hold community events to complement his own. How to Lend Support Certainly, hospices located along his route have an opportunity to welcome him and/or host a formal visit. All hospices, however, have the opportunity to coordinate an event in their community to capitalize on the national exposure his ride is creating. “For me, this is a continuation of a journey to recover and heal what I began at St. Luke’s Hospice years ago. For others along the way, it is an opportunity to tell their own hospice story and pay forward the gifts that were given to them.” —J.W. Frye awareness of hospice while also helping hospices to raise charitable donations. Frye’s progress on the trip will be tracked by a global positioning system, and he’ll provide blogs from the road describing what he experiences. He also plans to visit up to 15 The event being planned by St. Luke’s Hospice is an excellent example of such complementary outreach. “JW’s vision and overwhelming passion for hospice inspired us to get involved by hosting our own charity ride,” says Michelle Udicious, RN, BSN, the hospice’s director of community outreach. St. Luke’s ‘Let Me Go’ Charity Bike Ride is being held on April 2, and includes options to ride 11, 25 or 62 miles, along with a special ride just for children.
