Hospice Outreach: Tailoring the Message to the Audience
While access to hospice and palliative care among America’s minorities has increased over the years, improvements have been slow-going at best. According to NHPCO’s latest Facts and Figures, Caucasians still represent about 80 percent of patients served, while access among blacks and African Americans is 8.7 percent and access among Hispanics/ and Latinos is just 5.3 percent. For Montgomery Hospice, based in Rockville, MD, outreach to minority populations is a critical component of community outreach. Montgomery County has the most racially and ethnically mixed population of any county in Maryland and has more foreignborn residents of any jurisdiction in Maryland, Washington, DC, or Virginia, so it’s vitally important that the organization discusses what hospice care provides within the context of the patient’s and family’s cultural and religious beliefs. A good example of the organization’s work toward improving that understanding is a recent article in Hospice Matters, a quarterly newsletter resources to assist hospices in outreach to underserved communities. Among the free resources are Chinese-American, Latino, and African American outreach guides—all available as convenient PDFs that you can download directly from the site.

Written by vice president of counseling services, Robert Washington, PhD, MDiv, the article speaks directly to the African-American reader and addresses some of this minority population’s known concerns. “We know that African Americans are more inclined to want life prolonging treatments at life’s end,” writes Dr. Washington. “We will give you honest feedback about your desires, but we will always honor your decisions….” To read Dr. Washington’s article, visit the Montgomery Hospice website.
