It All Comes Down to Care at the Bedside
November is here—National Hospice and Palliative Care Month! This is a special time of awareness when those of us within the hospice and palliative care community reach out to help raise awareness about quality end-of-life care and recognize the accomplishments of our colleagues and organizations. I, for one, would like to thank the NHPCO membership that offers so much support and allows this organization to serve each of you in the important work you do. In fact, we’ve broken a membership record this year that’s unheard of among organizations like ours: 99 percent of providers have renewed their NHPCO membership. For that, I thank you all. And we are working hard to make sure we achieve that again next year. I also had an opportunity last month to spend time with many of you at the Clinical Team Conference in San Diego. This year’s CTC enjoyed the largest turnout in the past five years. This conference is special for me as it takes me back to my roots as a clinical psychologist and allows me to once again spend time with the team members focused on the direct care and services we provide to patients and families. More than any other event, CTC reminds me of why we do the work we do, but it’s not just work—it’s a passionate calling. We make sure that people who are nearing the end of life do so with support, dignity and compassion. We make sure that families are able to step out of the shadow that death so often leaves. Ultimately, what it all comes down to is the care at the bedside. And there are no professionals or dedicated volunteers who can do this any better. We are the best-trained and most highly-skilled professionals caring for patients and families with serious and life-limiting illness in this country. For all that you do, and for letting NHPCO support you, let me wish you a happy National Hospice and Palliative Care Month.
