New—Lighthouse of Hope Fund NHPCO affiliate, the National Hospice Foundation, has just launched the Lighthouse of Hope Fund, a program to help hospices in their work to make a patient and family’s remaining time together as meaningful and memorable as possible. The Fund is intended to provide financial support for “experiences for the living,” such as bringing distant families together or fulfilling a patient’s long last wish (like going fishing with a grandson, or enjoying a special meal at a favorite restaurant). “This new fund will allow hospices to add another dimension to the services they provide or expand on the services they already offer,” said NHF executive director, John Mastrojohn. How It Works A hospice must register with the Lighthouse of Hope Fund before it can participate in the Fund and apply for money. To Register: • The hospice must complete a registration form, have it signed by the CEO, and return it by mail to NHF, along with a $500 fee (payable by check or credit card). • The hospice will then be eligible to request up to $1,500 in total requests on behalf of their patients by December 31, 2013. Note—Only the first 100 hospices to register and pay their $500 fee will be eligible to request up to $1,500 in total requests on behalf of their patients by December 31—so if you’re interested, don’t delay in registering. If a hospice is a multi-site program, each individual site must register separately. To Apply for Funds: • Registered hospices must submit requests for funds on a per-patient basis, and must match dollar-for-dollar the amount being requested. For example, if an experience would cost a total of $500, the hospice (or its affiliated charitable foundation) must contribute $250, as would the Lighthouse of Hope Fund.
