Member News and Notes $10,000 LIVESTRONG Grant to Benefit HCC’s Palliative Care Services Hospice by the Sea Wins the Hospice Regattas National Championship In partnership with Hospice & Community Care (HCC) based in Lancaster, PA, Lancaster General Hospital has received a $10,000 grant from the LIVESTRONG Foundation to advance palliative care and pursue certification. The sailors who won the 23 regional hospice regattas held during 2012 gathered on Florida’s Tampa Bay during the weekend of April 12 to compete for the national championship. HCC utilized social media to spread the word about the grant competition and to request online votes to support the palliative program within the community. While 72 organizations throughout the country received LIVESTRONG grants, Lancaster General Health was the only Pennsylvania health system to win funding for its Palliative Care program. HOM Recognized for Mobile App to Improve Communication with Families Hospice of Michigan (based in Grand Rapids) is being presented with a Spirit of Innovation Award at the June Home Care & Hospice LINK Conference in Chicago. Its mobile app, HOM Cares, notifies family members and friends when a care provider visits a loved one. Those who have the app can see a picture of the caregiver, the date and duration of the visit, and information about the caregiver’s background and type of support provided— such as medical, spiritual or social work. The app was developed with a $24,500 gift from Verizon and an in-kind donation from Compuware. 34 NewsLine Hospice by the Sea as it takes the lead in the national championship. After three days of intense sailing, the four-man crew representing Hospice by the Sea (Boca Raton, FL) took first place—led by Captain Bret Moss, whose grandfather had taught him to sail more than 40 years ago and had also been served by hospice. Special kudus also go to the organization’s senior director of business development, George Tokesky, who stepped up at the last minute when one of the regular crew members had to withdraw from the race. Avow Wins 34th Annual Telly Award Avow (based in Naples, FL) took the Bronze at the 34th Annual Telly Awards which attracted more than 11,000 entries from 50 states as well as numerous countries.
