2007was Letters: IASC IASC events and seminars during ASR- don’t miss out! Thursday, January 24 2008 8 a.m.–9 a.m. Upstairs Meeting Room 23C IASC, ASR and BRA Retailer Roundtable 4 p.m. Upstairs Meeting Room 33 IASC Open Board Meeting and Cocktail Party an important year for pushing skateboarding forward and for the development of IASC. IASC reached organizational milestones as two important skateboard initiatives came to fruition—both of which will contribute to increase participation and the positive promotion of skateboarding to communities worldwide. First, by acting as the hub for information, IASC raised awareness of the issues skateboarders face and increased worldwide participation in Go Skateboarding Day. Second, IASC, together with the Tony Hawk Foundation and Skaters for Public Skateparks, published the Public Skatepark Development Guide. Reports from 2007 Go Skateboarding Day came back from skateboarders around the world who said it was the best day of their life. GoSkateboardingDay.org felt the effects of the more than 800,000 visits on June 21 and 600-plus events posted from 40 countries around the world. Videos on Youtube.com and friends on Myspace quadrupled this year. Worldwide participation was unbelievable and the best and biggest skateboard magazines in the world participated with coverage and advertisements for the official holiday of skateboarding. The Public Skatepark Development Guide was printed and distributed nationwide to more than 2,000 individual advocates, city/state parks and recreation departments, city officials, retailers and manufacturers. IASC is looking forward to the results since the effects of constructing a well-built skatepark can increase participation and sustain skateboarding communities—and IASC is getting the word out on how a skatepark can be a simple undertaking in any community with the help of this guide. The total number of skateboarders in the United States is more than 12,000,000, while the number of skateparks is approximately 2,000. IASC anticipates an exponential increase in that number over the next five years. IASC further developed its infrastructure with a new strategic organizational plan that included increasing the number of board members to 10 in order to increase diversity and dedicate a board member to the overall planning for each committee. When this board of directors meets, the issues discussed are related to the future and health of skateboarding. Each of these board members is passionate and dedicated to the success of skateboarding. In 2007 IASC also created The Go Skateboarding Foundation, a 501C(3) charity created to fund programs to promote skateboarding and make a positive impact in our society and on the lives of young skateboarders. In 2006–’07 the foundation gave out more than $15,000 in college and skate-camp scholarships to underprivileged skateboarders. These are just a few of the industry milestones IASC has achieved in addition to accomplishing its mission of promoting, increasing education and saving its members money. IASC is constantly working with our members to voice concerns and bring topics to light that affect your business and the health of the industry. In 2008 IASC challenges you and your business to do what’s best for skateboarding and to support the community through grassroots programs and other initiatives that promote skateboarding in positive ways. Thanks to our members and especially to ASR for their continued support of skateboarding and IASC!
