Trends: Skate Small shops diversify along with their owners’ interests By Woody Donahue Most skateboard retail operations are founded by people who simply love skateboarding and want to bring the stoke to other people in their communities. But even fanatics immersed in skate culture harbor competing interests and other pursuits. And as often happens when owners find themselves with retail outlets at their fingertips, the thoughts of offering more than skateboards is sometimes a strong draw. BlackWax skateboard shop in El Cajon, Cailf., was opened a few years ago by two friends who loved both skateboarding and music. Mike Page and Nate Black had always been heavily into music growing up and could never quite shake the pull of it. After working at Tum Yeto for a few years doing promotions and team duties, Page decided to make a go at the retail side of things by hooking up with longtime friends and opening a store that, along with skateboards, would also sell CDs, vinyl records, concert tees and other music-related items like patches, wallets and stickers. Page says it was an easy fit since a lot of today’s skateboarders are influenced by the music they hear in video parts by their favorite pros. Things have gone well on both fronts, and they’ve added an additional location at 200 E.Via Rancho Parkway in Escondido, in addition to their flagship store at Parkway Plaza in El Cajon. Route 44 in San Diego, Calif., appeals to skaters who remember the sport’s roots in both culture and hardware.
