NEWS U.S.Airlines Begin Implementing Secure Flight BY JAY BOEHMER The U.S. Transportation Security Administration’s passenger prescreening program, Secure Flight, hit a major milestone on Aug. 15 when the agency directed domestic airlines—and the travel agencies that support them—to begin collecting from passengers full names, dates of birth and gender. The milestone is the program’s shift from planning to implementation, and follows an embattled journey that began more than five years ago when the government scrapped its predecessor, the controversial CAPPS II program (BTNonline, Aug. 27, 2004). “There’s nothing more to be tested, and no more approvals we need,” said program director Paul Leyh, a former US Airways executive. “All it is now is to start the implementation process.” As of this month, domestic carri- store this data, but they’re going to ers are expected to collect those be transmitting that data to Secure new passenger data at the time of Flight at different times, based on reservation, but Leyh in early Au- their implementation schedule. Rearden Commerce this month announced the appointment of former GetThere general manager Bev Heinritz as its vice president of customer services and product support, effective Aug. 24. Heinritz will oversee about 50 employees on the implementation, customer relationship management and 24/7 support services teams. Heinritz departed GetThere in April 2008, following 22 years at parent company Sabre. She led the corporate booking tool’s growth from less than $4 billion in gross travel volume booked in 2003 to $9.4 billion in 2007 (BTNonline, Feb. 29, 2008). At GetThere, Heinritz worked opposite current Rearden vice president of worldwide sales Tony D’Astolfo from 2000 to 2004. He led GetThere’s sales efforts, and she focused on customer management. Heinritz most recently served a six-month stint as BCD Travel’s senior vice president of global online technology solutions, where she also was in charge of online booking tool vendor relations before she left in the spring as part of a management restructuring. Heinritz reports to Rearden president and general manager of B2B operations David Cassady, who joined the company in May. Cassady previously served as executive vice president of operations for software development company SpikeSource. In the first half of the year, D’Astolfo said, Rearden added more than 1,100 to its corporate client base of 5,120 companies. —Seth Harris Business Travel News www.BTNonline.com Monday, August 24, 2009 3 http://www.twitter.com/BTNonline http://WWW.BTNONLINE.COM http://www.BTNonline.com
