The restaurant, which was built in 2008 under the LEED for Retail pilot program, is the first restaurant to receive Platinum-level certification, the USGBC’s highest LEED certification level. “Part of changing the way the world thinks about and eats fast food is designing and building restaurants in more environmentally friendly ways,” says Steve Ells, founder, chairman and co-CEO of Chipotle. “Our team worked hard to ensure that sustainable elements that made sense for this location were seamlessly incorporated into the design of the restaurant, while still giving it the iconic look of a Chipotle.” The Gurnee Chipotle restaurant was designed to achieve LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use. In addition to a variety of recycled building materials and environmentally friendly systems, the restaurant boasts a 6-kilowatt wind turbine that generates a portion of the restaurant’s energy on-site, as well as a 2,500-gallon underground water cistern that harvests rainwater for irrigation. Chipotle also has designed and built other restaurants to comply with LEED certification standards—in Minneapolis and Long Island, N.Y.—and is awaiting final certifications on those projects. —jESSIE BOvE, MaNaGING EDITOR Photo: Courtesy of Chipotle Mexican Grill | Trends Sherwin-Williams forecasts design trends for 2010 esigners will be rediscovering the past for inspiration in the near future, according to Sherwin-Williams’ “Colormix 2010 Color Forecast.” The paint company recently identified four burgeoning trends in a Webinar. The deep teal and ash gray of african wildlife and landscapes, as well as “Rooted” “Simplified” the bright designs of the locals’ textiles and beads, also serve as a launching point for new designs. The second trend, “Simplified,” involves welltailored lines and clear, translucent materials that reveal shape and structure. jordan said this is a nod to the Bauhaus style of architecture, with its absence of ornamentation and its harmony between form and function. a current example of this trend is the new armani store in New York, which draws inspiration in its clean lines and sophistication from the city’s Guggenheim Museum—a space that has made a comeback among architectural critics. “Treasured” is the third trend, where natural | October 2009
