Design Leaders 2011 I
n 2010, North American retail design, architecture and branding firms reinvented and re-strategized as best they could, making up ground from the losses sustained the previous two years. While some top firms watched their retail billings decline in 2010, others made headway, rising back up the charts. San Francisco-based Gensler snagged the No. 1 spot this year for the highest annual retail billings in 2010 with $50 million, jumping from No. 4 last year. This represents a 28 percent increase from its reported 2009 retail billings of only $39 million. Gensler staffs approximately 2,400 employees and devotes 12 percent of its work to retail design (total billings for the company came in at $463 million in 2010). The firm reports designing 12 million sq. ft. of retail in 2010, with leading clients including General Motors Corp., Neiman Marcus, Best Buy Co. Inc. and YUM Brands Inc.
