A creative feast
T
here are many things I like about my job, but I have to say that arriving at the show site and
seeing everything come together has to be on top of the list. After many months of work
and planning, we finally get to experience the end result. What’s especially gratifying is that
GlobalShop is a huge collaborative effort. Each exhibiting company sculpts its own creation on
the show floor, creating a vast mosaic of beautiful displays for all to behold. Taken individually or
viewed as a whole, a walk through these exhibits makes for a remarkable sensory odyssey.
I’ve been to a lot of tradeshows. I’ve done so in the capacity of an attendee, an exhibitor and a
show manager. And of all the shows I’ve been to, I have to say GlobalShop is the most creative.
We’re more than a tradeshow; we’re a design show—and that makes all the difference. When someone asks me to describe our show, I always ask them to imagine a compilation of all the creative
beauty found at their favorite retailers.
This year’s show was astounding. From the minute you walked into the hall, you could feel the
buzz. It was tangible. Even during the chaos of set-up, you could see and feel that GlobalShop
2013 was going to be special. GlobalShop exhibitors have really been putting in the extra effort
lately, but this year it seemed everyone wanted to show off their creative muscle with new exhibits
and exciting products. Taking a final pre-show walk through the pristine hall minutes before the
ribbon cutting, I saw at least 100 exhibits that I thought might be candidates for DDI’s Best in Show
Booth Award (page 49).
GlobalShop’s real creative force is its attendees, and more than 7,300 of them swept in when
the show officially opened. Representing the world’s leading brands and retailers, our attendees
enjoyed three days of shopping for the products and services that help them create dynamic new
retail environments throughout the year. The vibe was palpable, with the constant murmur of
conversation accented by music, bells and other happy sound effects. The aisles started full and
remained that way throughout, even with the rare Chicago monsoon on the final day.
GlobalShop 2013 has come and gone, but the energy and excitement will remain with the
people who were there. They are the ones who sparked the excitement and will take it back
to their homes and places of business. I look forward to experiencing it again next March in
Las Vegas.
